Where will the knowledge worker be in 2008?
- Solutions enabling convergence of voice and data had already appeared by 2003. However, by 2008, the provision of video and voice over IP will be commonplace. Multimedia will be integral to the exchange of information, including voice, graphics, photos and videos.
- By 2008, adding a personal touch to communications will be essential: multimedia messaging, voice synthesised e-mail, video conferencing on the PC and electronic versions of handwritten notes will have become effective ways of responding quickly and spontaneously when exchanging ideas or information.
- For the knowledge worker, one of the most significant transformations is the role of wireless communications. In just one decade, WLAN throughput will have jumped from 2 Mbps to 54 Mbps or more. Wearing wireless-enabled PCs, the knowledge worker will be a global communicator: sending and receiving voice, video, text and handwriting.
- So, what challenges will be left? According to the European Commissioner for Enterprise and Information Society, Erkki Liikanen, a boom in 3rd generation mobile telephones (UMTS) is unlikely before 2008. So, in 2008, the knowledge worker may be looking forward to another evolution.
